StarBoxOffice.com Review

Acting: Darsheel justifies the top billing given by Aamir ahead of himself in the film’s credit titles. Tugging your heart literally, with his silent stares, Darsheel’s is an absolutely natural performance not seen in ages by any child actor. Making an entry at interval point, Aamir is absolutely brilliant. His interactions with Darsheel are a treat. Tisca and Vipin playing Ishaan’s parents look every bit the characters and perform naturally. Sachet Engineer playing Ishaan’s elder brother and Tanay Cheda as his best pal in the boarding school are good too.

Direction: Instead of falling in the trap of showcasing his technical wizardry in his directorial debut, Aamir concentrates fully on narrating a beautiful story with a lot of warmth and sensitivity necessary for the subject. The way he allows the camera to linger on to the sensitive moments and Darsheel without any hurry to move away is remarkable. A deliberate slow pace maintained works in totality. Apart from extracting noteworthy performances from every one, Aamir also proves that he is the best director to handle the actor in him. Amazing support comes in the form of camerawork by Sethu and Shankar Ehsaan Loy’s thoroughly engaging background score. Animation has been incorporated innovatively as well.

Script: The well researched script by Amole Gupte is instantly identifiable for many amongst us. Without unnecessarily going in depth and making a mockery of today's competitive academic structure, the script subtly incorporates the message that inclusion, empathy and emotional bonding with caring can help a child repose faith in himself and do wonders for his future. There are many effective moments that linger in your heart for a long time such as the scenes following Ishaan’s fight with a neighbourhood kid, Ishaan pleading his father not to put him in a boarding school, his mother flipping through his drawing book and discovering her son’s sensitivity, Nikumbh meeting Ishaan’s parents for the first time and making them understand their son’s actual problem.

Music: Shankar Ehsaan Loy at their vintage best, are perfectly aided by Prasoon Joshi's soul-stirring lyrics. The poetic title song and the Maa number with their picturisations touch your heart. Bum Bum Bole with Aamir swinging uninhibitedly with the kids to the catchy rhythm is absolute fun and will have kids going crazy watching it onscreen.
